June is alive with the sound of music at two of the biggest, long-standing music traditions that just get better with time. These four-day, roots-deep festivals are of the largest anywhere. A visit to Evansville, Indiana is sounding better all the time.
W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival (June 15, 2022 to June 18, 2022)
The W. C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival has grown into a heritage event for the Henderson, Kentucky community and is widely known across the Tri-State area and beyond becoming one of the largest free music festivals in the nation, drawing attendants from all over the world. Celebrate Juneteenth with the spirit of the Father of Blues, W. C. Handy. "I didn’t write any songs in Henderson, but it was there I realized that experiences I had had, things I had seen and heard, could be set down in a kind of music characteristic of my race. I started thinking about putting my own experience down in that particular kind of music.” –W.C. Handy, Louisville Courier-Journal, March 9, 1973.
