Evansville Arena Creating Spinoff Investment

Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel says the city's yet-to-be completed downtown arena is already beginning to pay dividends, beyond the construction jobs and contracts being awarded for the $127 million project. Weinzapfel says it has prompted private companies to come forward with plans for residential development in the area.

The city announced this week that more than 80 percent of the contracts for the arena project have been awarded and 65 percent of those deals have gone to area companies.

The 290,000 square-foot arena is expected to open late next year and will be designed as a venue for basketball, hockey, concerts and other shows, with a seating capacity of around 11,000.
